Oregon Green Schools - Ready to Go Green?Oregon Green Schools (OGS) is a statewide program that helps schools conduct waste, water, and energy audits, develop goals and action steps for improving their operations, and receive public recognition of their efforts. Emphasis is given to involving students so that they have opportunities for hands-on learning about basic tenets of sustainability and for empowering each other to address other important aspects of sustainability within their schools and communities.
There are 26 schools in Lane County currently inthe OGS program, with several more in the process of becoming certified. More than 200 schools across Oregon have joined the ranks of this 12 year effort to help schools green their operations - from light bulbs to cafetaria composting - and save money while making the planet a better place.
How Does a School Become a Certified Green School? Ideally, a school green team is formed that can determine the school's waste reduction and resource conservation program and be the driving force behind its implementation. Sometimes, it starts with just one motivated person.
For the OGS program, a school completes an application that includes the results of a waste audit and measurable goals for how energy, water, and waste will be reduced. The application is submitted to and gets approved by a Green School Coordinator, who passes along the name of approved schools to the Oregon Green School Association for certification at the Entry level. The school then received a framed cerfiticate and window decal that can be proudly displayed.
Once it achieves the Entry level, a school with green ambitions can work towards the Merit level or, better yet, the top Premier level. In order to advance the ranks, a school needs to show progress in its resource conservation program as well as outreach to another school (for Merit) or to the community (for Premier). Merit-level schools receive a plaque, and Premier-level schools receive an OGS flag.
Why Become an Oregon Green School? To be cool, of course! Plus, a school becomes eligible for funding opportunities such as a $500 incentive grant offered by the City of Eugene and the Lane County Waste Management Division to any public or private K-12 school that becomes a OGS-certified. And a school gets access to educational resources, a statewide network of other schools doing similar things, a chance for its students to attend the popular Oregon Green Schools Summit, and recognition in the community that your school cares and is doing its part to take care of the planet. Make your school the next to join! Our challenge to you: how green can you go?
